Portobello Cottages were five attached properties built before the Enclosures of Princes Risborough in 1823.

In January 1991 Ray Hewinson wrote a letter to the editor of Hallmark from Portobello Cottage no 1. (click Ray & Sylvia Hewinson to read this letter)

Conveyance 24th March 1860. The Executors of Sarah Shard(click Charles & Sarah Shard) of Grymsdyke sold to Charles Brown of Stockings (Stocken Farm), Portobello Cottages 1-5, with gardens and pasture of 2 acres, 2 roods, and 15 perches.

Charles Brown left his estate to be divided between his three nieces.    He had already sold Stocking (Stocken Farm.)    Fourteen cottages were independently estimated as worth £971–13s-10d

CONVEYANCE FEBRUARY 22nd 1886

All fourteen cottages were purchased for £971–13s–10d by Charles Brown’s executor, Frederick Aldridge Clark.    The proceeds divided to the three nieces.

CONVEYANCE OF GIFT

1894.   Frederick Aldridge Clark put the 14 cottages in trust for his daughter, Margaret Emma Clark, one of Charles Brown’s nieces.

MARRIAGE NOVEMBER 21st 1895

Margaret Emma Clark married The Most Honourable John Henry, Marquis of Ely thus becoming the Marchioness of Ely.

CONVEYANCE FEBRUARY 17th 1921

Margaret Emma Marchioness of Ely sold to Harold Edward Carter of Grymsdyke. all 5 cottages. (click Harold Edward & Eliza Carter for their life story).
