The details of Promised Land Farm are taken from the deeds, lent to me by Kathleen Turner. "Many thanks Kathleen - very much appreciated"

The land upon which Promised Land Farm was built had belonged to the Manor of Princes Risborough. Later it had become part of the freehold estate of the Stone Family of Grymsdyke Lodge, Lacey Green, who held it until 1858, when Sarah Shard, nee Stone died. click Charles & Sarah Shard for Sarah's life story.

The land that was to become Promised Land Farm, was part of Grymsdyke Estate, but was just bare land until 1865.

GRYMSDYKE ESTATE SOLD  

November 17^th 1863.   Conveyance.    Ann Batson, executor of Sarah Shard, sold to W A Thomas of Kensington 'all the mansion house, lands and hereditaments known as the Grymsdyke Estate.

LAND LEASED OUT BY W A THOMAS

W A Thomas of Grymsdyke Lodge, leased to Messrs Poulton various fields, distinguished by enclosures field numbers as follows :-

714. Two Walers Field.   22 acres 1 rood  6 poles

716. Great Walders Field.  15 acres 0 roods 27 poles

675.  Great Combs.  11 acres 0 roods 8 poles.

675.  Middle Combs.  6 acres 1 rood 24 poles

Part 671.  Part of Smallridge Wood (now grubbed up). 12 acres.   Yearly tenancy to Charles Brown.

PROMISED LAND FARMHOUSE BUILT

In 1865 a Farmhouse was built, containing 4 rooms, 2 up and 2 down.

GRYMSDYKE ESTATE INCLUDING PROMISED LAND FARM SOLD AGAIN

April 18^th 1878.   Conveyance.  John Forrest of Cheltenham purchased the Grymsdyke Estate for £15,000, from W A Thomas. click John & Evelyn Forrest for more about John Forrest

John Forrest he died in 1910, having owned this farm for 32 years.

PROMISED LAND FARM SOLD BY AUCTION

September 30^th 1911.   The executors of John Forrest, of Grymsdyke Lodge, conveyed Promised Land Farm to Thomas Tyler of Collins Farm. Loosley Row for £1,000.   99 acres 1 rood 20 poles.

EXECUTORS OF JOSEPH TYLER SOLD TO ERNEST SMITH

April 5^th 1945.   Conveyance.  Ernest Smith of Stoneycroft, Walters Ash purchased Promised Land Farm for £8,750 from the executors of Joseph Tyler.

WATER LAID ON

Ernest Smith had mains water laid on from the Main Road, Lacey Green to the farm.   A distance of 245 feet.

ERNEST SMITH SOLD TO OLIVE HUNT

July 31^st 1947.   Conveyance.  Olive Hunt, of Beaconsfield, purchased Promised Land Farm from Ernest Smith.

OLIVE HUNT SOLD TO THE TENANT

February 5^th 1949.   Conveyance.   William Philip Edward Garvey, telegraph engineer, the present tenant, purchased Promised Land Farm for £6,150, from Olive Hunt, now of Grange Farm, Saunderton.

MORTGAGE

February 1949.   Mr. Garvey took a mortgage for £4,000 for two years, adding a further £300 in November.

W P E HARVEY SOLD TO DAVID HAROLD POPPER

April 20^th 1951.   Conveyance.   David Harold Popper of Ruskin Street, London, gent, purchased Promised Land Farm for £6,950, from William Philip Edward Harvey.

ELECTRICITY LAID ON

April 19^th 1955.   Agreement.  David Popper with the Eastern Electricity Board to lay on electricity to Promised Land Farm.

DAVID HAROLD POPPER SOLD TO FREDERICK CHARLES TURNER

June 24^th 1958.   Conveyance.   D H Popper sold Promised Land Farm to Frederick Charles Turner, tenant of Walters Ash Farm, for £6,850.

NEW FARMHOUSE BUILT

GORDON ALBERT TURNER BUYS MORE LAND

June 17^th 1977.   Conveyance.   Gordon Turner purchased from Kenneth John Walden of Woodway Farm, Little Lane, Saunderton, for £8,500: -

SCHEDULE Part ordinance no 150, Smallridge Wood (now grubbed up), and ordinance no 76 Site of the hamlet of Coombs.

Research Note. Promised Land Farm is mentioned in the article Pre-History of Lacey Green written by Ian Kelloway which states "A flint axe head was found close to Promised Land Farm".
