Thomas Dell Jnr., born 1765, was the eldest son of Thomas Dell snr & Ann Dell, nee Jacobs

Marriage

In 1798 Thomas married Mary Carter at Hughenden Church. See list of children below.

Inheritance

Thomas Snr. Died in 1811, leaving everything to Ann, his wife, the properties to go to Thomas Jnr on her death.   Ann, however passed the freehold properties to Thomas Jnr. long before she died in 1827.

The Properties

Thomas inherited Speen Farm, Lacey Green Farm and the cottages and land at Up Green.

He also rented Darvills Hill Farm and land at Darvills Hill.adjoining Speen Farm.  Also the close of arable land called ‘Welches’ adjacent to the orchard called “Home Croft” containing 4 acres.

11th October 1804  Thomas Dell the Younger admitted to the Manor as tenant of William Darvill the copyhold close of land, formerly arable, but now of meadow, called ‘The Croft’ at Darvills Hill being 1 and half acres, formerly in the tenure of William Floyd

3rd June 1816  Thomas Dell Jnr admitted to the Manor as tenant of William Darvill of the copyhold Darvills Hill Farm. See Darvills Hill Farm Deeds, modern parlance

1817  Thomas Dell the Younger admitted to the Manor as tenant of William Darvill of the copyhold cottage at Darvills Hill where Diana Buckingham formerly dwelt, now in the occupation of Jacob Dell, with close or orchard adjoining containing two acres

21st  August 1826 William Darvill of Bledlow, farmer sold to Edward Anderson of Darvills Hill for five shillings  the property known as Darvills Hill Farm, where John Darvill dwelt, then Katherine Allcott, now occupied by Edward Anderson.   To have and to hold for 1 peppercorn for 1 year on the last day of the said term to the intent of transferring the possession to Edward Anderson.

Schedule Darvills Hill Farm, plus orchards and plots adjoining, also the close of arable land adjacent to the orchard called Home Croft, of 4 acres.

Release of a Messuage, Orchard and Close of Arable Land at Darvills Hill.

Researcher's Note   Katherine Allcott, late of Darvills Hill, widow, bequeathed to William Darvill of Saunderton, farmer, all her estate whatsoever and wheresoever.

Edward Anderson had contracted with William Darvill for the absolute purchase of the Manor lease of the messuage lands and hereditaments hereinafter described at the price or sum of five hundred pounds.

The property where John Darvill  formerly dwelt then Katherine Allcott and now in the occupation Edward Anderson at Darvills Hill together with the orchard and plots adjoining.  Also the close of arable land called ‘Welches’ adjacent to the orchard called “Home Croft” containing 4 acres.

29th June 1831    Mortgage taken by Thomas Dell Jnr of Speen Farm from Thomas Brown, mortgagee.

Thomas Brown was accepted by the Manor of Princes Risborough as mortgagee owner of all the estate of Thomas Dell for six hundred pounds.                          29th December 1832    Mortgage renewed by Thomas Dell Jnr of Speen Farm with Thomas Brown, mortgagee.

The mortgage, first taken out on 29th June 1832 is renewed, being £600 with interest of 5 per cent per annum

29th December 1832.   Further Mortgage taken by Thomas Dell Jnr of Speen Farm with Thomas Brown, mortgagee.

The sum of one thousand two hundred pounds at 5 per cent per annum.

9th June 1836.    Foreclosure Document for Recovery & Enforcing Mortgages

All Mortgages and bonds of Thomas Dell Jnr. of Speen Farm, Lacey Green Farm, Darvills Hill Farm, a cottage and land at Darvills Hill and 4 properties at Up Green, Lacey Green are all foreclosed.   Thomas Dell Jnr's property put into receivership

29th September 1837    Auction by Mortgagee of Thomas Dell under Power of the Court.

Darvills Hill Farm

Edward Anderson, tenant of Darvills Hill, Farm, purchased for £580, the Manor copyhold estate called Darvills Hill Farm comprising 20 acres of rich arable, meadow and orchard land, adjoining Speen Farm, now in the occupation of Mr Thomas Dell Jnr.

31st July 1838     Post Auction Conveyance for the Title of Manor Copyhold Premises

31st July 1838   This Indenture made Between Thomas Dell, late of Speen Farm, yeoman, Sir William Lawrence Young, Bart. of North Dean in the parish of Hughenden and Edward Anderson of Darvills Hill, yeoman.

Schedule

Lot 1.   Purchased by Edward Anderson for £580 – 1s – 4d.

Several pieces of arable or meadow land known by the names of Middle Close, Barley Field, Lane Close, Coppice and The Orchard and called Darvills Hill Farm, and held of the said Manor containing by estimation 20 acres, which were formerly in the tenancy of Joseph Williams, but now for many years past in the tenure of  Thomas Dell or his under-tenants.

Lot 2.   Speen Farm.  Purchased by Sir William Lawrence Young, Bart.

Lot 3.  Lacey Green Farm.   Charles Brown purchased, but the deal fell through.

Lot 4.   4 Cottages and meadow at Up Green.   Purchased by Joshua Dell, son of Thomas Dell

THE DEEDS

The documents specified in the schedule of the auction sale relate to the title and premises of all the lots to be sold.  The deeds to be held by the purchaser of the property of the highest value, which person was Sir William Lawrence Young, Bart.

THIS INDENTURE WITNESSETH that in pursuance of that condition Sir William Lawrence Young, Bart, and his assigns produce to Edward Anderson and his assigns, the deeds as occasion shall require   At request and costs of Edward Anderson or assigns, furnish true copies of the said deeds and such copies to be attested if required

16th MARCH 1839      SURRENDER of THOMAS DELL to EDWARD ANDERSON

SCHEDULE OF COPYHOLD PROPERTIES SURRENDERED with one CONDITION

THE CONDITION   Ernest Anderson paid £580-1-4d for these properties at auction.   £260 due to Thomas Dell for rent.

16th March 1839.   In the Manor Court of Princes Risborough, Thomas Dell, yeoman, tenant of the Manor and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and sixty pounds paid to him by Edward Anderson, yeoman of Darvills Hill, his tenant, surrendered the two copyhold cottages and gardens, formerly one farmhouse known as Darvills Hill Farm, which said two cottages were formerly in the several tenure of Joseph Williams and now for many years past in the tenure of Thomas Dell or his under tenants.   And to which said cottages with other land containing 20 acres lately sold and surrendered to the said Edward Anderson, by the said Thomas Dell.

ALSO the copyhold cottage, standing at Darvills Hill, wherein Diana Buckingham formerly dwelt, but of late by Jacob Dell.    Also the close or orchard adjoining, containing two acres, now occupied by Thomas Dell.

ALSO the close of land, formerly arable but now meadow called The Croft at Darvills Hill being one acre and a half, formerly in the tenure of William Floyd but now of Thomas Dell.

Extra Cottage

In 1822 Thomas built an extra cottage at Up Green

Speen Farm is registered in the name of Thomas Dell Jnr.  It is all freehold.

Mortgages

1.   October 31st 1828.   Thomas Dell of Speen Farm took out a mortgage for £450, with Joseph Burrough and Elizabeth Chapman.

2.   In 1830 a mortgage was taken out on cottages at Up Green

3.   1831 extra mortgage

4.   December 29th 1832.   Thomas Dell of Speen Farm took out a mortgage for £1,200 with Thomas Brown of Dorchester, gent., on the copyhold properties at Darvills Hill.

5.   1834 extra mortgage.

Death of Mary, his wife in 1834.

Bankrupt

In 1837 the mortgagees foreclosed and all Thomas Dell’s properties were sold by auction in 1837. Put 'foreclosed' and also 'auction' into Search for similar events.

Will

Thomas died in 1843. He had made his will in 1839.

I give all my estate to my sons, Jacob Dell, see Jacob & Rebekah Dell and Joshua Dell, see 1801 Joshua Dell ,my heirs and executors.

Samuel Dell 1809-1882. Married in 1830 to Elizabeth Ward of Speen. They had 10 children. Lived Slough Farm, Haw Lane, Saunderton. Samuel, farmer.

Ann Dell 1815-? Married in 1834 John Claydon. Ann and John were the great grand parents of Dennis Claydon.
