James Tilbury born 1824

RESEARCHER’S   NOTE

James Tilbury has only been put in this history, because he has caused a problem.  He once owned some land and it is not known what he did with it.   Maybe it will be revealed in due course.

ENCLOSURES OF PRINCES RISBOROUGH 1823

In the enclosures of Princes Risborough two allotments were made to James Tilbury.

1.       One was plot no 683, a Freehold piece of land, being the driveway to the later called Floyds Farm.   It had been allotted to Joshua Dell, but James Tilbury bought it off him.

2.       The other plot was no. 684, a piece of land, a new allotment, leasehold to the Manor.   It was the plot upon which the Black Horse public house was later built.

MARRIAGE

1849.   James Tilbury married Elizabeth Ayres

CENSUS 1851

In the 1851 census, James Tilbury 27, and his wife Elizabeth, nee Clark, 25, with their son Richard 3, are living with his uncle Thomas Tilbury 70 widower, who is the tenant farmer of what was later know as Floyds Farm.

CHILDREN

Richard 1848 died 1859 aged 11

Ellen      1852.  Stayed in England, married William Brown, 2 children, pre marriage, Phineas Seth, and Lily and one daughter, Minnie, with William Brown.

Elizabeth born 1854.   Emigrated with parents to USA

Mary 1856 – not at home for the census.   Emigrated to USA with parents.

DEATH of PETER’s WIFE

Elizabeth died in 1859 aged 33.

CENSUS 1861

James, 37 widower, labourer, living in Highwood Bottom with Ellen & Elizabeth. Mary was not at home

2^nd MARRIAGE

In 1864 James Tilbury married Susannah Hawes.  Susannah was the widow of Jabez Hawes, landlord of the ‘Whip’ public house.   Her maiden name was Ginger.

CENSUS 1871

At Darvills Hill.  James Tilbury 46, Susannah 37, Ellen 18, Elizabeth, Mary 15, Lucy 2

EMIGRATION

James, Susannah, Elizabeth and Lucy emigrated to the USA

CHILD

Frederick born in Kansus 1875.   Died 1963.

DEATH OF SUSANNAH

Susannah died in Whalcom, Washington USA

3^rd MARRIAGE

James married in Jackson 1901 Florence Nixon

CHILDREN

Percy William Tilbury 1901-1989.   Orville Tilbury 1904-1904

RESEARCHER’S NOTE 2021

There remained descendants of James Tilbury living in Lacey Green.   Ellen Brown 1851 – 1927 and her daughter Minnie, who married Fred Adams and Minnie’s daughter Phyllis who married Bill Dell. They had 4 children.  And at the last count 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, many of whom still live in the village.

WHAT DID HE DO WITH HIS LAND

In 1823 James owned the driveway to Floyds Farm and the plot upon which the Black Horse was built.   The Black Horse records a landlord in 1841.   What had happened between 1823 and 1841?
