1. The Life of Alfred Ward

Alfred Ward born 1827 was the son of Jesse & Ruth Ward

Jane Maberly born ? was the first wife of Alfred Ward. She was the daughter of ? She married Alfred in 1858. She died in 1871.

Alfred Ward married his second wife, Elizabeth Steel known as 'Betsy' in 1872. She was the daughter of John & Hannah Steel.

Alfred and 'Betsy had one daughter as follows :-

Mary Ann Ward, known as 'Polly' born 1874 married Henry Allen in 1913. See Mary Ann Allen, nee Ward

Alfred joined the family business started by his parents.(grocery, with Post Office and carpentry work shop. Much of their carpentry trade was making coffins.

Alfred inherited the business in 1881 on the death of his father also becoming the sub-postmaster.

Alfred buys from his brother John, who moves to High Wycombe.

August 9^th August 1884.   Conveyance.   Alfred Ward, of Lower Road, Loosley Row, postmaster, grocer and carpenter, purchased from John Ward, his brother, for £220, nos 1 & 2 Lime Tree Cottages and gardens on ‘Pond Piece’, in Kiln Lane Lacey Green. (John Ward had inherited Lime Tree Cottages from his father in 1881. After the court case (see 1879 Ward versus Ward) John and his family moved to High Wycombe. The tenant of No 2 was George Witney.

Research Note.  Alfred’s father Jesse Ward had built Lime Tree Cottages.   He left them to his son John Ward on his death 10th December 1881.

Alfred Ward had been charged with assaulting his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ward, the wife of John Ward.

Elizabeth 'Betsy' Ward died 1904. Alfred Ward died in 1906.

On the death of Alfred, Mary Ann 'Polly' became the postmistress. See Mary Ann Allen, nee Ward
