1949     National Service Act in peacetime introduced.   All men 17 – 21 to do 18 months.  

Extended in 1950 to 2 years because of actions in Malaya, Korea, Cyprus and Kenya.  

1960    National Service intake ended.

(Those taking apprenticeships were deferred until they were qualified in their trades).

In 1918 an exhibition by The Local History Group into the RAF Local Residents discovered that the following men had done their National Service in the RAF:-

Anthony Reed, click Tony & Janet Reed. Doug Tilbury, click Doug Tilbury. Peter Coles, click Peter & Judy Coles. Graham Baker, Frank Baker.

PS. The following men, who are understood to had done their National Service in the RAF but very little information is known. It would be good to know more :-

Flight Lieutenant Harold Williams, Navigator WW2 flew mosquitos. Wilfred Tagg, Main Road, Lacey Green. Group Captain ? Walker. A.V.Marshall, West Cottage, Loosley Row, Stan Rixon, radar training in Wales. Bill Smith, RAF Regiment in Burma. Roy Thompson, joined RAF after National Service. Flight Lieutenant Frankie Baker, lived Lower Road, Loosley Road and in Lacey Green, flew Beverly Transports in Suez crises. Maurice Lacey, lived Loosley Hill. Vivien Phillips. Peter Green, lived Red Caps, Loosley Row.
