Up Green & Lower Green. The earliest part of Lacey Green

From Lacey Green History

Following the establishment of a number of farms in the 1600’s, very little other development took place.

A map surveyed about 1815/16, (It was published in 1818), gives a very clear picture of that date.   It was at the end of the Napoleonic wars, and everywhere had become very impoverished.   It would have been very unlikely that anything had been built for some time.

THE MAP

The map had been made for Lord Cavendish.   He had already purchased a number of farms from the Lord of the Manor.   He was now campaigning to apply to get Princes Risborough enclosed.   The map was maybe to prove how much he had, maybe to spot other possible acquisitions and maybe to identify other farmers to be persuaded to join the campaign, for it was necessary to get all farmers in agreement.

AID TO RESEARCH

The map gives a great deal of detail.   Houses shown in red & farm buildings in green.  The sizes of fields and their names. The field names can indicate the owner, the occupier, the mortgagee or simply a given name.   There are no roads in the hamlets, for that is all Lacey Green and Loosley Row were, - isolated hamlets.

UP GREEN & LOWER GREEN See Up Green and Lower Green

The map shows in detail the areas known as UP GREEN & LOWER GREEN, the earliest parts Lacey Green.   These two areas are researched under their separate titles. They start with details from the 1818 map and details from the enclosures records of 1823.
