1915 conveyance of Kia Cottage

In 1915 several local properties were sold by auction. They were all part of the estate of Thomas Dell of Saunderton, passed down from Joshua Dell, born 1757. One of them was Kia Cottage. It was described as "A piece of land with freehold cottage and outbuildings. For some years past in the occupation of Amos James". Harold Hickman bought Kia Cottage for £185. The Hickmans did not live there, but continued to let it to Amos James and his wife Pol Ann.

VEGETABLES & CRICKET

During WW1 the County Education committee had rented land on the Main Road, opposite the school to provide the school with garden plots in order for the boys to be taught how to grow vegetables. These were sold, Mr Hickman appears several times in the school logbook, delivering manure to the gardens. He is also mentioned numerous times, allowing a field to be used for school cricket matches against other villages. Occasionally a cricket match is played by the girls. The school played football matches too and although not stated, were probably played in the same field.

WEMBLEY

In 1924 Harold built a house in the garden of Kia Cottage. He called it "Wembley". It was the year of the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park, which maybe inspired the name. Downstairs, facing the Main Road was a large room, designed to be a shop. Harold and Emily moved into the rest of the house. This was to be "HICKMAN STORES", a much loved establishment for the rest of the century. Click Shop. Hickmans Stores for history of this shop.

BERT DELL

Harold and Emily had no children, but their nephew Bert Dell, born in 1923, spent much of his childhood with them. Bert's parents were not well off and had two other children, Bill and Jack. Harold and Emily were very happy to have Bert with them.
