1810 ROADS SURVEY

A survey was done of the roads (established tracks) in Lacey Green and Loosley row in 1810 although it was not published until 1820/21 two years before the enclosures were implemented.    See attached plan drawn by Dennis Claydon.

THE ROUTE FROM HUGHENDEN VALLEY to PRINCES RISBOROUGH

The Speen Road ran from Hughenden Valley through Speen along Highwood Bottom straight across the Common of Princes Risborough to the pond behind Windmill Farm.   Here there was a junction

DISCONTINUED

It was proposed that the part that crossed the Common of Princes Risborough was to be discontinued.

AT THE JUNCTION

Windmill road came in from Parslows Hillock, here it branched.

One track turned south south west towards Lacey Green village.   It did not go into the village, which had no roads at that time.   It met a track coming up from Loosley Row in a south easterly direction.

The other arm was a continuation of the Speen Road carrying straight ahead cutting northwards to join ‘Woodway’ and proceed down to Princes Risborough.    About where it joined ‘Woodway’ was a sharp turning to the south, called ‘Wycombe Road’ (later to be called ‘Lower Road’) into Loosley row.

DISCONTINUED

It was proposed that the two branches off Windmill Road towards Lacey Green and down to Woodway were to be discontinued.

DISCONTINUED

Two branches from Loosely Row had met the two branches from the Windmill Pond, thus forming a diamond shape of land that held the Windmill and Windmill Farm. This was part of Loosley Row.   Three branches were to be discontinued, the Wycombe Road (Lower Road) remaining.

PROPOSED NEW ROAD connecting Woodway to a new road through Lacey Green effectively put the Windmill and Farm in Lacey Green, not Loosley Row.

WINDMILL ROAD EXTENDED

Windmill Road would remain with a new stretch of road added, Through a prosed new crossroads, continuing straight ahead down into Loosley Row.   However the original section would be moved a few yards to the north just off the ridge, later to be called ‘Pink Road’.

As the extended Windmill Road proceeded into Loosley Row it continued down (in 2021 called Loosley Hill’, as far as the ‘Wycombe Road’ spur (in 2021 called ‘Lower Road) that came off Woodway.   Wycombe Road continued down to join the main Turnpike, Risborough to Wycombe road.   By 2021 ‘Wycombe Road’ had become 'Lower Road' and ‘Little Lane’ and the Turnpike was now the B4010.

PROPOSED FIRST ROAD THROUGH LACEY GREEN

Woodway would in future continue up from Princes Risborough to a new crossroads where it would become a new road continuing straight through Lacey Green.    The first section at first being called ‘Mill Road’ and where it entered the village called ‘Main Road’

Most of these proposals were confirmed in the 1823 Enclosures Act.
