Report in Hallmark by John Munday, Cub Leader.

The 'Egg Tombola' on behalf of the Jimmy Saville Stoke Mandeville Hospital appeal raised £40 and thanks are due to all who braved the bitter weather. Apologies to the residents who were disappointed not to be dragged from their homes to play egg-tombola in the road on a Sunday morning.

Explanation by Joan West. This enterprise came about because we, at Stocken Farm, were supporting the Lacey Green & Loosley Row Cubs.

At that time with young hens just beginning to lay we had an abundance of small eggs (the most popular sizes are medium and large and luckily the young hens quickly graduate from small to bigger sizes).

The cubs enjoyed their construction task. They used a farm trolley and on it made a 'spinning jenny'. When the arrow stopped it pointed to a number. That number denoted how many eggs people had won. The charge was minimal and every entrant won eggs, some more than others.

They cubs loved dragging the trolley, knocking on the doors and offering people the chance to have a go. No-one declined, and it is true that some complained that they had not been called upon.

We at the farm were glad to find homes for perfectly good eggs, most of which would have had to go for breaking. The Appeal for Stoke Mandeville Hospital was £40 the better.
