Tribute to Brian Turney by Michelle (daughter)

In 1949 on the 22nd of April a total legend was born, Brian John Turney (our dad).

Dad was born at Idle Corner in Lacey Green, and as he grew up it was plain to see he was going to be a farmer. He attended Lacey Green school and went on to Welsbourne secondary school.

He left school at 15 years old and went to work for Jack Lawrence where he lived in a small caravan in the back yard. Dad’s love apart from farming was motorbikes and he went on to build his own tribsters as he called it, a BSA frame and Triumph engine.

This is how he came to meet his Lynne (our mum) As he told everyone - the best thing he got from Marks and Spencers.

It was a cold and rainy day and mum was sheltering in the shop doorway when a voice said “you will get cold stood there” and that was the start of the rest of his life.

Dad and mum married in 1970, everyone gave it 6 months, and its now 51 years later.

Dad and mum started married life living in a caravan at Little Horsenden farm at Stuart Macintosh's, his friend of a lifetime which is where his first daughter was born in 1971. Michelle grew up and followed in her dad’s footsteps and became a head cutter. Also known as a hairdresser.

In February 1973 we moved to Banbury where dad became head tractor driver at Ashdrop estate working for the Hewitts. lt was then in February 1974 Marie was born, “his tiny” as he called her because she was born premature. Marie also followed in dad’s footsteps and could take a bike apart at the age of 18 months.

Then in 1978 we moved to Chinnor Hill where dad was farm manager/contractor for Arthur Andrews. This is where we found our love for horses and dad had his dream car, his prize Dodge Charger which was admired by all.

In 1980 dad and mum made the decision to move to Lacey Green to live with our nan as our grandad had died the year before and she was struggling on her own.

It was then that dad set up as a farm contractor and soon developed his legendary skill for hedge cutting. The Chilterns will never be the same again, but we will have square clouds now he’s up there.

Our dad was one in a million and loved by all that had the privilege to meet him.

He was known for his sharp wit, funny sense of humour, impeccable kindness and his ability to do anything for anyone.

A true gent and the best daddy you could ever have wished for, and our lives will never be the same again.
