In year 2000 Ex pupils described Lacey Green School in a questionnaire at a school reunion organised by The Local History Group.

1913-1922 Constance L Gomme  Loosley House Cottage, now Baker Foundry Cottage LR.  Walked to school. Head Miss Grey with Miss M Janes & Nance Hawes. Vicar Robson.  12 in class. Left aged 14. No new build. Toilets outside.  Punishment- stand on form or in the corner. Own clothes-just tidy. No meals. No free milk. No trips. 1914-1923 Gladys Ing Small Dean Farm Saunderton now Luxford Cranleigh Main Rd LG.  Head Miss Palmer & Miss Grey with Miss Janes & Miss Hawes. 35 in class. Left at 14. Walked to school. No new build. Toilets outside.  Punishments standing on form & cane. School meals-no. Free milk-no. Trips no. Nature walks yes. Sports-none. Played hopscotch & skipped. Additional information.  Remember walking from Small Dean to school & one day per week walking on to Risborough for cookery lesson & in afternoon walking back from Risborough to Small Dean via Lacey Green.

1915-1924 Nell Rixon 1 Warrons Row LG now Rosemary, Crown Field Saunderton.  Head Miss Palmer then Miss Grey with Miss Janes, Miss Nancy Hawes. 35 in class. Left at 1. Punishment standing on form for talking. No new build. Toilets outside. School meals-no. Free milk-no. Trips-no Nature walks-yes. Sports none. Played skipping, hopscotch, dabbers, stand before your playmate.  Additional Information.  Had to walk to Risborough for cookery once a week – remember stopping at Pyrtle Spring to fill a bottle to have a drink.

1918-1927 Hannah Mary Baker Woodway House, woodway, LR now Bray, 22 The Avenue, PR.  Head Miss Grey with Miss Hawes & Miss Janes. 30ish in class. Vicar Rev Gee.  No new build. Toilets outside. School meals-no. Free milk-no. Trips-no.

1918-1928 Daphne Bristow Ye Olde Cottage LG, now The Post Office, Bradenham.  Head Miss Kate Grey with Miss Mabel Janes & Miss Nancy Hawes. Vicar Richard Gee. Addition Information – Once a week the girls went to Risborough to learn cookery in the British School. The Rev. Gee had been a missionary in India and the children were allowed to try on the costumes which he had brought back.  All the children were in the same school room, but the boys sat on one side and the girls on the other. The girls were taught to sew.  I didn’t like gathering and smocking or making a man’s shirt.  The vicar came every week.  We had a half day holiday on Ash Wednesday.

1920- 1930 Frances Emma Dormer Hill Court Westlands Rd LG now Icknield Court PR. Head Mr Avery with Miss Hawes (Nance).  Vicar Rev Robson. No new build. Toilets outside. Played hopscotch.

1922-1931 Charlie A J Claydon Kiln Cottages LG.  Head Mr Aldridge. No new build. Toilets outside. Left at 14. Punishmet- the cane. Sport-cricket. Addition information—Once selected to represent Lacey Green School at a cricket match against Bledlow Ridge School.  The team travelled on foot to and from Bledlow Ridge. Lacey Green lost the match, my being the highest scorer with 3 runs! The reason for this crushing defeat I thought was because the fact that Bledlow Ridge fielded a team of older boys!

1923-1931 Douglas William Brett Well Cottage Church Lane LG now Bedgrove, Aylesbury.  Left aged 14. Walked when living LG then bike last 18 months from Naphill. Head Miss Gray then Mr Aldridge with Miss Janes & Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Richard Gee then Rev Rev Moreton.    Punishments kept in after school & given lines to write. No uniform, every boy wore short trousers & frocks for girls. School trip to Southampon to go over the liner “Berengania”.   Sports mainly football. 1923- 1932 Winifred Harvey Steep Hill Cottage, LR now Attridge, 2 Greenlands LG.   Head Miss Grey & Mr Aldridge with Miss Janes, Miss Jarvis & Miss Young. Left at 14. Vicar Rev Moreton. No new build. Toilets outside. School meals-no. Free milk-no. Trips – Day trip by train to Southampton  to see the Berengaria liner and to North Bucks to see the churches. Sports Rounders & running races. Played skipping & spinning tops. Additional information –

Remember buying halfpenny worth of sweets at Mrs Lacey’s shop.

The sewing class made red blazers to wear to school

The church fete days. We played living whist – dressed as playing cards, we then played the game.  Fancy dress – two lady gardeners at Gracefield made mine & my sister Kathleen’s dresses.

We once had a school pageant & I was Britannia.  I had to sit up high & wear a helmet while everyone sang Rule Britannia. The teacher made me take off my glasses - Britannia didn’t wear glasses!

I used to take Miss Jarvis’s class for an hour on Friday afternoons while she was away. I was nearly 14 then.

When Miss Grey was at the school we had annual concerts in the Village Hall, we practised long & hard, at school & at home.  Mr Fred Floyd & Mr Harold Hickman ran a taxi service for the old people & anyone who was unable to walk. They paid 1 shilling & sixpence between them for a car.

I loved my school days & cried when I had to leave.  I went to call for Phyllis Rutland to go for a walk & Mrs Rutland said she saw me come home from school & she had never seen anybody look so miserable.    


1924-1934 Barbara Barefoot Park Cottage Church Lane LG. now Dell Great Hampden, Gt.Missenden. Left aged 14.  Head Miss Gray with Miss Goss, Miss Janes, Mr Aldridge & Miss Jarvis. Approx 26 in class. Own clothes no uniform.  Meals No. Free milk-no  Trip to Southampton to look over Mauretania. Father Harry Barefoot went to school.

1926-1935 Constance Macro Box Cottage Woodway LR now Mackie 8 Greenlands LG. Left aged 14. Head Mr Aldridge with Miss Goss, Miss Jarvis & Miss Janes. Vicar Rev Morton. No new builds. Toilets outside. No uniform Free milk- yes.  School trip to Southampton. Sports-none. Played-skipping.

1926-1935 Basil Rixon  2 Currell Cottages LG, now Aylesbury.  Left at 14. Head Miss Gray & Mr Aldridge with Miss Goss, Miss Jatvis & Miss Janes.  Vicar Revs Gee, Moreton & Sharpe. Approx 30 in class. No new build. Toilet outside. No uniform. Meals- no, we had to go home for lunch.  School Trips to Hendon airshow & West Wycombe Hill. Sports football. Played a variety of chasing games.  My mother was the school caretaken & I had to go back to school each evening to help her.

1927-1936 Joan Biggs Wayside Cottage Main Rd LG, now-same. Head Mr Aldridge, Miss Norris (became Mrs Guerney) with Miss Jarvis & Miss Janes. Vicar Rev Moreton. Left at 14. No new build. Toilets outside. Punishment-standing in the corner, the cane. No uniform. School meals- no. free milk-yes. Sports-rounders. Played Farmers in his den, hopscotch & skipping.  Addition information – We celebrated Empire Day (I remember singing Rule Brittania) and May day when we danced round the maypole. We also had to practise for concerts held in the Village Hall  We had sports days.   Did entertainment for the church fetes held in the Vicarage garden, remember being in a pack of cards.

No new build. Toilets outside. Own clothes. School meals-no, free milk-yes. Trips-no. Sport netball. Played hopscotch, skipping.

Additional Information – Remember school concerts organised by Mrs Guerney at the Village Hall. Fetes in the Vicarage garden. Dancing round the maypole.   A pupil about to receive the cane from Miss Harding took the cane from her hand, broke it across his knee and remarked that she would do no more damage with that today.

1928-1942 Winifred Rose Rixon 2 Currells Row now Carter Mistley LG. left aged 14.  Head Miss Gray then Mr Aldridge with Miss Jarvis, Miss Janes & Miss Norris.  Vicar Rev Morton then Sharpe. 30+ in class. No new build. Toilets outside.  No rewards. Punishments- slaps & cane. Own clothes. Free milk-latter part. School trip once to West Wycombe Hill. Sport – netball. Played kick can. My father started school at LR, presume he went to LG.  Additional information. My mother was the school caretaker, we had to help her, so we sometimes stayed behind or went home for tea first.

1930-1939 Edwin Biggs Wayside Cottage LG now 11 Pymcombe Close PR. Head Mr Aldridge with Mrs Guerney, nee Norris, Miss Jarvis & Miss Janes. Vicar Rev Morton. Left aged 14.  Approx 30 in class.  No new builds. Toilet outside. Punishments stand in corner, cane. Own clothes. Sports cricket , football. Played kick tin.  Father Ralph Biggs at school

1933-1939 John Harris Graham Cottages LG now Frieth, Henley-on Thames.  Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Janes & Miss Jarvis.  No new build. Toilets Outside.  Own clothes, never wore long trousers.  No school trips. Sports football. Additional information see 1939 School memories by John Harris.

1933-39 Margaret Ann Harris Graham Cottages LG now Smith Weston-super- Mare.  Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Jarvis & Miss Janes. No new build Toilets outside. Cane for boys only.  Clothes home made by mother. Free milk-yes. Sports rounders & races.  Additional information see 1939 School memories by Margaret Harris.  

1933-1942 Leslie Rixon Cromleigh LG now 13 Greenlands LG. Left aged 14.  Head F Norris, (became Mrs Guerney on marriage) with M. Janes, E Jarvis with relief teachers Mr Newby & Mrs M Beaumont. Vicar Sharp then Steward. No new build. Toilets outside initially not connected to flushing water.  Cane for punishment. No uniform. School meals not available. Sports cricket & football. Father Gerald Rixon at school. Additional Information. I lived in a bungalow (no longer there) next to the school and the garden fence was within 6-8 feet of the school building.   I was forced to take my gas mask to school – the teachers said it would take to long to get it.   I’m sure I could have got home quicker than it took the vicar to get into the church to ring the bell to give the warning of a gas attack!

1935- 1944 Harold Robert May living in Westlands Rd LG.  left school age 14. Walked to school. Head Gurney with Miss Janes. Second hand clothes. No uniform. Sports- work. Mother Doris Rixon at school.  

1936-1945 Jean Mary Lawrence Hillcroft Dairy, LR. Now Adams Haw Lane Bedlow Ridge. Left aged 14. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Janes & Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Stewart. Walked or pushbike to school.  No new build toilets outside. No uniform. One school trip to the cinema in High Wycombe. Sports netball & rounders. Played skipping & hopscotch.  Additional Information.   I remember my father Mr Lawrence was the milkman bringing a churn of milk into school then I was measuring it out in cups for the children and then making tea for the teachers.

1936-1945 Alan Luxford Willow Cottage Main Rd LG now Westwinds Main Rd LG. Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Janes & Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Stuard.  First extra class built. Toilets outside. No uniform. Sports-none. Played nothing. Mother Gladys Ing (Luxford) at school. Additional Information.  I remember the building of the air raid shelter.  The issue of & the carrying of gas masks. Picking up potatoes at Widmer Farm (war effort)

1936-1943 Paul Oakford Woodview Redland End Speen, Aylesbury, now Ickford, Aylesbury. To school on Farmers bus. Head Flo Guerney with Pouty Janes & Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Steward. First extra class built. Toilets outside. Punishment feet tied together/cane. Not uniform.  School meals- No, enjoy them-yes, free milk-yes. Sports- rounders. Additional information.  I was purported to have kicked an evacuee (Margaret Nielson) & sentenced to have my feet chained together every playtime for one week    

1938-1947 Church Cottage, Church Lane LG now Randall 19 Eastfield Rd PR . Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Jarvis & Miss Janes. Vicar Rev J Steward. 20 in class. No new build. Toilets outside.  Not uniform. Free milk. Sport rounders.

1938-1947 Gordon May Darvills Hill LG. now Coolangatta LG. Left age 14. Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Jarvis, Miss Janes, Miss French. Vicar Rev Stewart. No in class 30. Extra subject- geography about how the war was going on. Any, all second hand (war on). Free milk-for a time. Sports? –rounders. No sweets (wartime). Mother Doris Rixon at school.   Additional Memory.  I remember Mrs Ginger coming into school about 3pm shouting the war was over May 8th 1945.

1938-1947 Bernard George Luxford Willow Cottages Mill Rd LG now Kington Rd H.WY. Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Janes, Miss Jarvis. Approx 24 in class. No new build. Toilets outside. No rewards. Detention. No uniform.  Free milk. Sports- None. Played nothing. Mother Gladys Luxford at school.  Additional Information. The field behind the school was used as an airstrip for high ranking officers, for Bomber Command at Walters Ash during the war years.

1939- 1948 Douglas Tilbury 1 Hillock Cottages, Parslows Hillocks, Lily Bottom Lane. Now 2 Hillock Cottages Parslows Hillocks.  Caught Farmer’s Bus or walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Janes & Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Steward. Studied maths, English, art, R.E., music, knitting! No new build. Toilets outside.  Approx 30 in class. No rewards. Punishment -? lots of shouting. Second-hand clothes (from USA, wartime)  School meals-yes, enjoy?-yes. Free milk-yes. Trips-none.  Sports football with RAF (after school). 1942-1953 Robin Oakford Ashlea LG now Leaview LR.  Wife Marion. Ch Christopher & Caroline. Walked. Class 25  Head Mrs Guerney – Miss Janes, Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Steward.  No new build. Toilets outside. Meals yes, enjoy yes, milk yes. Sport cricket, football, rounders.  Parents at school Ernest Oakford & Rosalind Ginger.

Toilets outside. Meals no, milk yes. Punishment, sent out of class. Own clothes, short trousers. Went on walks. Sport Football cricket, rounders.  Played chase. Father Arthur Williams at school.

1944 -1945 (family emigrated).  Paul W Claydon, 2 Kiln Cottages LG, now Canada. On Wiki.

1945 1946 (family emigrated when Linda was 8). Linda Ruth Claydon, Kiln Cottage LG, now Wriglesworth , Canada. No new build. Toilets outside. The cane was there. Played Tag. Father Albert Hawes Claydon at school. I remember on 1st May holding the end of a streamer and circling around to wrap the maypole. I remember going on a little hike to the countryside to see spring flowers and song birds.

1947- 1953 Daphne Boorman Alverstoke, Pink Road LG now Williams, Walters Ash.  Walked to school.  Head Mrs Guerney,- Miss Jarvis, Miss Janes. No new build.  Sent out of class.  Only trips were walks. Sports rounders. Played hopscotch & chase. Parents Jessie Smith & Eric Boorman at school.

1947-1954 Betty Susan Hickman Chiltern Breezes now Biggs, Ruskin, Loosley Hill, LR. Walked & bus to school. Head Mrs Guerney,- Miss Jarvis, Miss Janes. Vicar Rev Stewart. 25in class. 3 R’s & art. No new build. Sent out or stand in the corner. Uniform. Sport rounders. Played Farmers in the den.  Remember the school dentist and the nit nurse.  Father Reg Hickman at school.

1947-1953 Dennis Claydon Chamonix, Kiln Lane, LG. Walked to school. Head Mrs F Guerney. Miss M Janes, Miss E Jarvis. 30? in class. No new build.  Toilets outside. Stars for good work, cannot recall any punishments. School meals-yes. Enjoy-mostly. Milk-yes. Trip to singing festival at Naphill Village Hall. Sports football. Played chasing games. 1948-1954 Marilyn Attridge Beechwood Cottage, Woodway LR, then 17 Greenlands LG now Collett, Lewknor. Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney,-Miss Jarvis.  The cane. Miss Jarvis gave sweets for getting sums correct.  School meals-yes, enjoy/ I think so. Milk yes. Sports rounders, running. Played hopscotch, skipping. I remember getting very cross as Betty Weller beat me in a maths test by 1 mark!  We liked Ascension Day as we went to church in the morning & had the rest of the day off. On the whole I think I enjoyed Lacey Green School.  Mother Winnifred Attridge nee Harvey at school.

1949-1954 Joyce Walker Lane Cottage, Lower Rd LR. Still the same. Head Mrs Guerney with Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Stewart. 22 in class.  No new build. Toilets outside.  Not uniform. Sports rounders. Played tag.

Additional information. I can remember school plays on Parents Day.  Also one year I was chosen to be May Queen (can’t think why) and dancing round the maypole.

The school dentist, with the pedal drill, which I hated, also the check for head lice.  I also remember Miss Jarvis, getting a splinter out f my finger.

1949-1958 Rosemary Oliver Tor Cottage, Church Lane, LG now Mortham, Pond Cottage, Kiln Lane, LG. Medical laboratory scientific officer. Walked to school. Head Mrs Gurney. Vicar Rev. Steward.  40? in class. No new builds. Toilets outside. Can’t remember punishments but Mrs Guerney had a temper and shouted.  No uniform. I had a ‘liberty bodice’ that I hated.  School meals-yes. Enjoy? No, always potato, cabbage & gristle. Milk-yes.  Sports-exercise & skipping. Played- mainly fighting with the boys. For additional information click 1959 School Memories by Rosemary Oliver.  

1950-1957 Dorothy Parslow The Bunch LR now 4 Greenlands LG.  Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney, Jarvis, Roberts Vicar Stwerd 30 in class.  No new building. Toilets outside. No uniform. School meals-yes. Enjoy?-yes. Milk-yes. Sport rounders. Father Harry Jhon Parslow at school.

1950-1957 Andrew Oliver Tor Cottage, Church Lane, LG now Ontario. Canada. Head Mrs Guerney. Vicar Rev Steward. About 20 in class.  No new builds. Toilets outside. No uniform, short trousers. Punish by kept in after school. School meal- yes until last 2 years. Enjoy? No. Milk-yes. Sports football.   Additional information. I passed the 11+ at a time when I had no knowledge of ever passing the 11+ in earlier years. It was a time when intellectual ability was not regarded well by my peers – I was the kid who was picked on!

1951-1951 John Bernard Claydon, Highlands, LG (now Ardengrove) now at March, Cambs.  Walked to school.   Head Mrs Guerney. Vicar Rev Stewart.  Toilets outside.  Father George Lacey Claydon at school.   Additonal Information. I attended Lace Green school for only a short time as we moved t Speen.   I enclose a school photo of my dad in the school play (the police man) in 1929 & my godfather Harold Williams is the lady sitting in front of him.

1951-57 Beverly Attridge 17 Greenlands LG now Gibson Bledlow.  Walked to school. Head Mrs Guerney,- Miss Javis. Miss Roberts? Vicar Rev Steward. No new build. Toilets outside.  School meals-no. Milk-yes. Sports rounders. Played hopscotch. Mother Winifred Attridge, nee Harvey at school.

     

1955-1960 Lorraine Attridge Corner Cottage LR now Hartley, Reading. Walked to the Whip then caught the bus. Head Mr Anthony, -Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Keene. 40 in class. 3 R’s Nature Walks, Country Dancing etc. No new builds. Uniform. School meals-yes. Enjoy? not much. Milk yes warm! Play – skipping.   I remember Mr Anthony getting me to play the piano for school assembly hymn at the age of 8. Also being in his class at 8 which included all the 8 to 11 year olds. Mother Elsie Gomme at school.

1957-1961 Tim Cowell Grysdyke Farm, LG now Bristol.  Walked to school.  Head Mr Anthony & Miss Davies.  Vicar Rev Keene.  Class of 30. No new build. Toilets outside. Sports football & athletics.  Bishop’s prize 1960.  Additional Memory. Being a dead tree in Peter & the Wolf!  

1957-1963 Sally Cowell Grymsdyke Farm, LG now Sturdy, Hurstpierpoint, W. Sussex. Walked to school. Head Mr Anthony & Miss Stamp, Miss Davis, Miss Jarvis. Vicar Rev Houghton. Class of 30? No new build. Uniform-yes.  School meals-no. Milk- yes. Sports- athletics & country dancing.  Additional Information.   The horror of being expected to do P.E. in my knickers!

1959-1960 (family moved in 1960) Judith Rose Attridge Corner Cottage LR now Vockins Bell Lane PR. Walked to school. Head Mr Anthony. No new build.  Parent Elsie Gomme at School.

1959-1967 Susan Dormer Tor Cottage, Church Lane, LG now Brown Vilaflor, Ellesborough Rd,Butlers Cross. Walked to school. Head Mr Anthony & Miss Agnew, Mrs Stansfield, Vicar Rev Houghton. Class of c 30. New build with toilets inside while there.  Sports Netball. No uniform.  Father Frank Dormer at school.  

1960-1967 Linda Dell Kia Cottage LG now Pomeroy, 5 Wycombe Rd, PR. Walked. Head Mr Anthony, Miss Briggs, Miss Stamp, Mrs Stansfield. 25 in class. Uniform. No new build. Trip to Shortenhills.  Sport netball. Played skipping. Parents Phyllis & William Dell at school.

1961-1967 Philip John Dell Kia Cottage LG now Green Hedges, Church Lane LG. Partner Dell Bros. carpenter.  Walked to school. Head Mr Anthony – Mrs Stansfield, Mr Keen, Miss French. Vicar Rev Keene 20-25 in class. No new build.  Reward stars. School meals-no. Milk-yes. Trip to Shortenhills.  Sports cricket & football.  Parents William & Phyllis Dell at school

1962-1969 Mark Luxford Westwinds LG now Thame. Walked to school. Head Mr Anthony-Miss Agnew, Mrs Standfield. Vicar Rev Houghton. 25 in class. Uniform. Cane.  Meals-yes. Enjoy- yes. Milk-yes. Sports cricket & football. Played British Bulldog. Father Alan Luxford at school.

1964- 1971 Sarah Bradley Horseshoe Cottage LR now Wiseman Wiltshire. Grade VII piano.  Walked or lift. Teachers Miss Briggs, Miss Agnew, Mrs Stansfield, Mr Keen class 30. New build yes. meals yes Milk yes. Uniform optional as last year I think. Sports swimming, netball. Additional Information. I loved the project of studying ‘100 hundred years ago’ looking at old dates in the churchyard. I loved sports days.

1964-1971 Maxine Luxford Wycombe Rd, PR now Moulton, Tring.  By car to school.  Head Mr Anthony,-Miss Agnew, Mr Keen, Miss Perkins, Vicar Rev Houghton.  Gold stars for good work. The cane was a threat but I never knew it used. Wore uniform. School meals-yes, enjoy-yes. Milk-yes. Sport netball. Played skipping, balls against a wall, Jacks, & hopscotch. Sad memories of friends moving on due to their parents being in the RAF. Father Alan Luxford & G.mother Gladys Luxford at school.

New building with indoors toilet in my time. Sport swimming.  Played chase , British Bulldog, French elastic. Faher Alan Luxford at school.  Additional Memories. Sports day and fancy dress (I was a Turkish dancer) 

1966-1972 Tim Walker Northlea, Lower Road, LR now 6 Berryfield Rd, PR.   Walked to school.  Head Mr Anthony. & Mrs Stansfield & Mr Keen. Vicar Houghton?  New build with indoor toilets while there. Uniform-yes. School meals-yes, enjoy-yes, milk-yes. Sports cricket & rounders.  Additional Memories.  Playing marbles into the dent in the tarmac near the climbing frame.  The opening of the new swimming pool.   The old canteen building.

1967- 1969 Tom William Tagg Chippins LG now Staploe, Cambs. Head Mr Anthony. Vicar Rev Houghton. Sport football. Additional information. I remember enjoying my time at the school but obviously from all the blanks I have a poor memory for detail!

Uniform.  School meals-yes, enjoy-no. Milk-yes. Sports netball, rounders, athletics. Played French skipping, jacks.  

1969-1975 Elizabeth (Liz) Pushman Umtata, Naphill now Harbord Ealing London.  Car or bike to school. Head Mr Anthony with Mr Keen, Mr Bains, Miss Perkins, Mr Caudery, Miss Agnew. New building with toilets inside. Punishments were detention or writing lines. Uniform. Trip to Shortenhills. Sports netball. Played chaintag, British Bulldog, chasing games.  Additional information.  A group of us did a batik for some celebration at the church.  It hung in the church for years – what happened to it?

1969-1976 Jane Phillips Lone Pine, Bradenham Wood, W Ash now Kemerton Rd, London.  Car, sometimes bike, to school  Head Mr Anthony with Miss Agnew & Mr Caudrey.  26? in class. New building with inside toilets in this time. Punishment- lines. Stars given. Uniform.  School meals-yes, enjoy-sometimes. Milk-yes. Sports netball, running.
