JESSE WARD born circa 1800

THE FAMILY

Jesse Ward was born in Speen.    In 1827 he married Ruth Eggleton.   Their four children were Alfred Ward, born 1827, Jabez Ward 1832, Mary Ann Ward 1836, and John Ward 1839.

THE PROPERTY

Ed.   In the 1823 Enclosures of Princes Risborough this plot was allocated to Thomas Eggleton.   It was an old plot, rented from the Manor and had no house.   Ruth Eggleton had married Jesse Ward in 1827.    Research as to a likely connection here is ongoing.

GROCERY AND CARPENTRY

Jesse and Ruth ran a grocery store and Jesse also worked in the carpentry workshop

POST OFFICE

A post office was added about 1840 when Post Offices first became established.

CARPENTERS

Jesse and all his sons were carpenters.  A trade for which the Ward family, most of whom lived in Speen, was famous, in particular the building of large barns.

COFFINS

Alfred joined his father.   Much of their trade was in making coffins.

WILLIAM WOODS, MORTGAGEE, SELLS A PLOT

March 8th 1856.   Conveyance.  William Woods, mortgagee of Kiln Farm, sold to Jesse Ward of Loosley Row, carpenter, a close of pasture land, known as ‘Pond Piece’, containing 2 acres, 3 roods, for £81.   It was part of Kiln Farm.   Subject to a private right of way for Joshua Dell, Richard Gibbs and William Woods (Ed.  later became Kiln Lane)

JESSE WARD

Jesse Ward built 2 cottages which were known as Lime Tree Cottages.

JOHN WARD

10 September 1881.   John Ward, son of Jesse, inherited ‘Pond Piece’ and the cottages from his father.

ALFRED WARD

Alfred Ward inherited the store, Post Office and carpentry business

DEATHS

Ruth died in 1848.  Jesse died 1881.
