THE LACEY GREEN ALLOTMENT SOCIETY LTD

EARLY HISTORY OF THE SITE

The land which became the Lacey Green Allotment Society’s had belonged to the Lord of the Manor of Princes Risborough prior to 1823 when all the land was enclosed and allocated to individual people.   At that time the two plots from which it developed became the property of Sir William Lawrence Young.   Plot no 659 he had purchased from the Commissions (probably part of Princes Risborough Common which had been sold up, rather than being allotted).   Plot no 677 was split in two, the smaller part he exchanged for tithes, so this too may have been part of P. Ris. Common.   Both plots were freehold.   Sir William Lawrence Young was an absentee landlord.

1842 DEATH of SIR WILLIAM LAWRENCE YOUNG

Sometime between 1823 it changed ownership to Sarah Shard of Grymsdyke

1863.  SALE OF LAND    

17^th November 1863   Conveyance.   Ann Batson, Edward Russell Horwood, George Faulker Francis and Charles Brown, executors of Sarah Shard of Grymsdyke Lodge, who died 1858, sold to William Alexander Thomas the Grymsdyke Estate, which now included the above fields, previously owned by Sir William Lawrence Young.

1878.  SALE OF LAND

18^th April 1878.   Conveyance.   W A Thomas sold to John Forrest, the Grymsdyke Estate which included the hereditaments before conveyed in 1863

1911 SALE OF LAND

9^th October 1911.   Conveyance.   Following the death of John Forrest on 21^st March 1910, his executors sold to the Reverend William Robson, of the Vicarage, Lacey Green, several properties including land at Lacey Green, containing 6 acres 29 poles, as previously conveyed in 1863 and 1878.

1926 SALE OF LAND to LACEY GREEN ALLOTMENT SOCIETY LTD.

21^STOctober 1926.   Conveyance.   The Reverend William Robson, formerly vicar of Lacey Green, now of Cheltenham sold to the Lacey Green Allotment Society Ltd, secretary Free Currell of No 1 Kiln Lane (1 Lime Tree Cottages) for £200   ????

SCHEDULE

2 pieces of land at Lacey Green.   Ord. no. 278, 4.068 acres and Ord. no. 279, 2.111 acres, making a total of 6.179 acres.   All let as allotments to various tenants.

1927 PIECE OF LAND SOLD BY THE ALLOTMENT SOCIETY

18^thAugust 1927.   Conveyance.   Lacey Green Allotment Society sold to Rupert James Rixon of 2 Belle Vue, Main Road, Lacey Green

SCHEDULE

Piece of land, formerly part of the Allotment ground, containing 23 poles and having a frontage of 167 feet to an occupation road belonging to the society.   (This then became part of no 2 Belle Vue)

1932 BITFIELD HOUSES

In 1932 houses were built facing onto the occupation road.    As these were built on bits of allotment this road of houses was known as ‘The Bitfield’.   Thirty years later it was renamed ‘Westlands Road’.
