"The Jubilee Celebrations of Queen Victoria's accession was joyfully kept on 20th inst., by the inhabitants of three hamlets of Lacey Green, Loosley Row and Speen.

. Mr W Eggleton of Wardrobes, placed at the disposal of the Committee a twenty acre grass field with all the resources contained in the homestead at Widmere Farm - a very central and pleasantly-situated site, shaded from the afternoon sun, and commanding on three sides a rare and beautiful prospect.

. Jubilee services in the Church at 2p.m. ... It was but a short march to Widmere.

. Some 200 children had their tea first, and afterwards all the elders over fourteen sat down to a plentiful meal of meat, bread, and butter, cake, tea & etc. Nor were the extremely aged and afflicted forgotten, care being taken to supply all who could not come with a cause for rejoicing also.

.Too much praise cannot be given to Mr Poulton, Mr J Eggleton, Mr Oakley, Mr Redrup, Mr M Ward and the committee generally.

.The sports that followed were of the usual description, flat and hurdle races, the amusing peg race, and egg and spoon race, high and long jump, each for men and boys successively, races and contests for girls and women, all with prizes of varying values. Here Mr J Eggleton excelled himself as king of sports - as umpire, starter, judge, he was almost ubiquitous.

. A display of fireworks at ten o'clock crowned the day's pleasure.

. A cup and saucer made by Messrs Doulton for the Jubilee, is to be presented to each household as a final memento"

Research Note

This edition of the Herald was packed with individual reports of celebrations in the different parishes, many more appearing in the following week and even later issues. The Lacey Green report is longer than the average and mentions that it was the landowners and the wealthier inhabitants who provided the means for 1,200 people to be catered for.
