Recently I had the pleasure of meeting someone who is involved in that furniture and related craft work that still forms a focus in this area. He is Ron Goodearl, chairman of Goodearl-Risboro' Ltd, the makers of Whiteleaf furniture. His ancestors settled in South Bucks in the 17th century.
Ron was born in Risborough and moved to Loosley Row in 1971, having married locally in 1957.
I was struck by the way family ties have been strong all these years. Seventy years ago there were three brothers in the business, and they retired in the 80s. About 400 employees were engaged at that time - though the number is about half that now.
Ron reports that 1978 was the best export year, largely due to success in the middle east, all part of a large UK/Arab deal. The enterprise has now spanned five generations, for a nephew has joined the company. Ron seems pleased with the business -and he aims to keep things that way.
