Rupert and Diana? Butler Lived at Lily Bank Farm

Hallmark January 1991 Comment from Ted Janes, the Editor.

"We are indebted to Mr. Butler of Lily Bank Farm for the use of this copy. A letter received by his firm from a young man in the USSR, it shows the desperation that now exists in the Eastern European countries. Reproduced as received :----"

"Ladies and Gentlemen Subject, employment matter first & foremost I'm ever so much sorry if I got you at the wrong moment or in the wrong fashion with my unsolicited application, I do it on my own accord, so don't let it hurt you, I wish it in no way.

My letter is not the fad of the hour, I lit upon the idea just after having got the address, cos' I saw opportunity here to take a dip in more wise working conditions – it's brought by it, cos actually hardly can I presume Whence & Whither our system goes, one can't work anymore in this way. Now close to the sublect;

I approach you in the hope to find a job, in what capacity – either will answer, I don't attach weight to it, that's as you please, but at this I must tell you that for now I'm employed as foreign students inspector, nearly old hands, working with people doesn't try me, it's absolutely second nature to me, 5 languages put into practice:

English, French – ample enough, except for deep subletics

Italien – normal

German – normal, oral practice lacks

Arabic – the most necessary (+ in writing &reading)

Russian & White Russian – mother languages

Ukranian – to understand

can type both on Russian and Latin keyboard or to treat a text with software programs.

Could you put me on your job or am I no good? The lack of comfort is not drag on me in any respect, I live in a small way, not high in demands. I would be glad through & through if you get me placed and would try to do all in your native fashion to meet the views.

From my formative years I flung myself into studies and still keep them up, cos's the hunger for knowledge is the way my mind lives upon: I believe only in fate and what science teaches. What I want most to tell you, if I'm to enter a new profession even to start from the bottom, not a rap it matters: it'll be OK by & by, I picked up a little of everything, but in particular I'm much given to Philosophy, social science, Logic, Psychology, laws, criminal medicine, graphic design – not profoundly of course.

I'm cherishing the hope you would obligingly excuse me if I'm something of a nuisance, I blindly believe in chance, cos' anyway it's inherently possible if the things work out for the best and you grew interested in me.

I stand no ceremonies, in case I walked on pat put me to the IQ test.
