JOHN GRUBB ESQUIRE WAS THE LORD OF THE MANOR OF PRINCES RISBOROUGH PRIOR TO 1823

1823   THE ENCLOSURES.   ALL PROPERTY WENT INTO PRIVATE OWNERSHIP.

Most properties were allocated out by the Commissioners, but the vast Common of Princes Risborough on the hills of Lacey Green and Loosley Row, and the many Parish Woodlands had to be purchased from the Commissioners.

John Grubb purchased from the Commissioners all the Parish Woodlands.  Also a large part of the Common.

TWO BANKRUPTCIES

1841 John Grubb of Horsenden, bankrupt.   His estate sold to Lord Buckingham and Chandos

1848 Lord Buckingham and Chandos, bankrupt.

SALE 1^st June 1848, the estate of Lord Buckingham and Chandos

The following lots had previously belonged to John Grubb

Lot 10  A capital Smock Tower Windmill, millers House and 8 acres 0 roods 35 poles of adjoining land, occupied by Mr John Steel on lease for 11 years from Michaelmas 1838

Lot 11  The Kiln Farm at Lacey Green, containing 56 acres 1rood,31poles, leased by Mr Charles Webster.   Also a cottage and garden at Loosley Row and 3 pieces of land leased to James Taylor and Thomas Stevens containing together 7 acres 2 roods 35 Poles.

Lot 12  Coomb ottage and a wood called Smallridge Wood containing 55 acres 3 roods 35 poles.

Lot 13 The woods called King’s Wood, Speen Wood and Abbotts Hill Wood containing together 273 acres 2 roods 7 poles, all in hand.

And a cottage and several parcels of meadow and garden ground held by Parslow, Turner, Dell and others.

Lot 14  Darvills Hill Wood, in hand, containing 21 acres 3roods 14 poles and 3 gardens adjoining, containing 1 rood 28poles held by Williams , Turner and Dell.

Lot 15  Caen Field and Colway Woods in hand, containing 22 acres 1 rood 7 poles and a Pightle and garden held by John Chilton and widow Jones, containing 1a, 0r, 4p.

Lot 16  all that part of Abbotts Wood in hand, lying to the south side of Hampden Church Road, containing 19 acres, 0 roods 23 poles, with a Pightle and several gardens, containing 1 acre 1rood 28poles, held by Chilton, Turner and others.

All lands are free of tithes.  All the tenants are under to quit at Michaelmas next.  Lots may be viewed by the permission of the tenants. The woods may be seen by application to Mr Thomas Parslow, the woodman…..
