1914 Lacey Green School

Research Note. Notice. 12th June 1914. Loosley Row School will be closed for the period of the war.

The following entries were recorded in the logbook of Lacey Green School in 1914 “June 12^th. Three children were admitted from Loosley Row Church of England School, which will be closed for the period of the war.  Childrens’ names are to be retained on the registers of that school and entries in summary are to be continued in the Loosley Row School for their scholars.   A copy of notice sent to parents, owing to an increase of scholars from Loosley Row, children under five from this school will be excluded during the period of the war, by order of the County Council.   June 13^th. Scholars form Loosley Row School were admitted today and amalgamated with the different classes.

WEATHER

February 4^th. The wind blew a pane of glass out of the door.  February 15^th. Heavy snowfall.   February 24^th. Very heavy fall of snow.   March 7^th. Another very heavy snowfall.   March 28^th. A very heavy snowfall.   June 23^rd. Very wet day.   October 4^th. Heavy showers this morning.   October 10^th. Very stormy.   November 1^st. Heavy showers during the dinner hour reduced attendance this afternoon.   November 7^th. Heavy showers at the time of opening.   Too wet for the children to go out to play.   Barometers have fallen to their lowest level.   The continual showers are quite exceptional.  It has not been possible to visit the garden.   November 19^th. Very severe weather.  Thermometer in class registers 41 degrees at 9am.   November 20^th. Snow and rain.   November 21^st. Very severe weather.   November 27^th. Thermometer registers 39 degrees at opening of school, though there is a good fire in the room.   November 28^th Weather still very severe.   December 4^th. Weather very severe.   Children too cold.   December 5^th. Thermometer 39 degrees this morning, weather severe.   December 11^th. Heavy snow fell this morning.  December 13^th. Very severe weather.

ILLNESS  (Measles, Tuberculous foot, German measles, Ringworm, Severe Colds, Influenza)

June 2^nd. Two away with measles.   June 14^th. Arranged for the care of Cecil Smith, who has a tuberculous foot.   June 23^rd. Nurse examined the heads for ‘nits’.   Only one found.   June 30^th. Albert Gomme sent home, suspect German measles.   October 16^th. Nurse visited the school, examined Bertha Baker and pronounced that she had ringworm, but said the child might attend school if the parents continued treatment.   November 28^th. Many children have severe colds.  December 8^th. Much influenza amongst the children.  

DISTRACTIONS

November 15^th. School closed on account of the National Mission Service in the church at 1-45.   December 13^th. School closed for Red Cross Concert.

EXTRA – CURRICULA

May 8^th. Garden lesson taken in school.   May 24^th. Addressed the whole school on “Our Empire”. May 30^th. Gardening lesson was taken in school this afternoon writing notes.   June 14^th. Mr. Mann taught the boys how to plant cabbages.   June 23^rd. Woodwork taken in school.   June 30^th. Read a letter from Mr. Avery.   August 1^st. Children’s letters sent to Mr. Avery.  August 4^th. The beginning of the third year of the war.   Children stood around the Union Jack, placed in front of the school, sang the National Anthem and saluted the flag. Mr. Robson (vicar) was present.   Patriotic songs were sung in the school and special prayers were said for the army and navy.   November 16^th. Vicar took division I for the explanation of Holy Communion.    December 11^th. Read a letter from Mr.Avery to the children.

REQUISITES

October 20^th. Mr. Hutchins visited bringing the new encyclopaedia presented by E.C.Streatfield.   November 16^th. Half a ton of coal received from Mr. East.   December 7^th. Mr. Hickman, from Lane Farm, sent two loads of manure for the garden.   Part of it was dug in today.

NOTES

March 14^th. Reported H.Weller for very bad attendance. April 11^th. We commence the new school year and for the summer months at 8am and finish at 11am.  Afternoon sessions 12 to 2.10pm.  May 2^nd. Started school again at 9am owing to the majority of the children coming late, and in the afternoon at 1pm finishing at 3.15pm.   May 30^th. I am leaving today to join His Majesty’s Forces.   June 2^nd. I Fanny Palmer commenced duties in the school today.   June 12^th. Cecil Saunders has passed his examination for a free place in the Grammar School at High Wycombe.
