		+	'''Hallmark February 2024''' report by Nigel Glenister. It takes a determined member to want to turn out to Wednesday night club tennis when it’s cold and the wind is blowing! The weather during November, December and January has been truly shocking and had a major detrimental impact on our tennis activities.

		+	However, the prospect of having to reorganise Aylesbury League matches has kept postponements to a minimum and our winter positions are generally good. Men’s 1 sit third in division 5 with every chance of promotion this season. Men's 2 has seen several really good players join over the past 12 months and this is reflected in their performance. They've won 9 out of a possible 12 points and sit second in division 8 with a favourable run of matches to come.

		+	After promotion last season, the ladies have struggled this winter and are towards the bottom of division 7 with a couple of games in hand. Our mixed team have performed strongly and should get promotion to division 5... fingers crossed!

		+	Over the summer and autumn, we play our internal singles’ championships which are always exciting and played to the max.

		+	The ladies’ final was Julia Argent vs Jo Boothroyd and the men’s was Matt Keane v Paddy Woods-Ballard. Well done to all who took part and special congratulations to our eventual winners Jo and Matt.

		+	In late November, our coach Dan organised a fantastic trip to Malaga to watch the Davis Cup quarter finals and play some tennis at Malaga Tennis Club. Malaga is a lovely city with lots of narrow streets, interesting shops and perhaps some good bars along the way too! Malaga is hosting again this year, so maybe the chance of a return visit?

		+	We arrived back just in time for the club’s annual Christmas dinner which was held at the Princes Risborough Golf Club across the valley. 40 or so members enjoyed a lovely meal and congratulations to Angela and Ross Gibbings who were my chosen members of the year. Both have been very loyal members who work tirelessly for the club and have carried out various roles over the past 15 years or so.

Padel tennis is the fastest growing sport in Europe and is very popular in France, Spain and Portugal. It is played on a half-sized court and is a cross between tennis and squash. It is loved by both young and old and is quite easy to pick up. In the UK, clubs have struggled to keep up with soaring demand and many have introduced waiting lists.

		+	The other major focus will be to change the courts to a different surface. Artificial clay is probably the best and provides asofter feel for sore knees. The major disadvantage is the level of maintenance required to keep it in good condition.

 Our Womens team have enjoyed a great start, sitting top of Division 7 after three fixtures, however, a defeat (following a valiant effort) at Aylesbury threatens their position.  Mens 1 & Mens 2 are both mid table, and our mixed teams are both seeking their first wins- it’s early in the season and they have both only played 2 fixtures so far. We wish them all success throughout the season.

 We are excited to announce that the Club is in an advanced planning stage to bring padel tennis to our community. Padel is the world’s fastest-growing sport, popular with the likes of David Beckham, Anthony Joshua and Andy Murray, and is a cross between tennis and squash.  It is played on a half sized enclosed tennis court

 By the time you read this, the summer holidays will be just starting. During the latter part of July and the majority of August, Dan will be running his multisport summer camps, and there is something for everyone.... tennis, cricket, rounders, unihoc and football.  Finally, | was pleased to award prizes to two members of the year. Jackie Coles has done an amazing job with fund-raising, putting in hours of work together with her partner Mike. Also, one of our newer members, Simon Floyd has really engaged with the club, playing lots of tennis and introducing a number of his friends to the club. Well done both, here’s to a great 2023!

 If you are thinking of New Years resolutions, cardio tennis is a great way of getting fit.  Sessions run Thursday morning and evening and Saturday morning  It’s a bit like circuit training with a tennis racket and a bit of friendly competition… tennis ability not important!  For anyone retired or semi-retired, members and non-members there is a U3A session 1-3pm Wednesday.

		+	This year, it has been relatively mild (so far), and the Sunday morning club sessions have generally been sunny. We normally experience a drop in attendance during the winter period, but these club sessions have had record numbers. Perhaps it’s the weather or New Year’s resolutions, but whatever, it’s great to see so many.

		+	On Sunday 9th January we took the opportunity to show members our new trophy for Club Of The Year which we received at the Bucks Lawn Tennis AGM in November. The award was for the progress that the club has made over the last few years and the substantial upgrade in facilities. The Japanese have a great word “kaizen”, meaning continuous improvement and certainly the club cannot afford to rest on its laurels.

		+	This year, our focus is on building a clubhouse by the courts which has toilet facilities and an open plan kitchen with plenty of glass facing the courts. We have just appointed a local architect and we are looking forward to seeing his ideas.

		+	This is going to be an expensive project and will require a lot of effort from members in terms of fund raising and will be reliant on us being successful with grant applications. It’s not going to be easy, but we hope to complete the building in 2023 or early 2024.

		+	A clubhouse will obviously have numerous benefits, not least allowing us to host our own events by the courts. Social events are an important part of the club, and we try to do as many as possible throughout the year.

		+	In late November, 41 members had a very enjoyable Christmas dinner at the Pink and Lily. It’s not easy catering for hungry tennis players, but the Pink and Lily produced excellent food with good service too. It was a lovely evening and the club managed to raise some £300 via a raffle kindly organised by Jackie Coles.

		+	I was also delighted to be invited to Dan’s beginners’ class Christmas dinner at the Black Horse. The word “beginners” does them a disservice, they have improved massively over the past year or so. Anyway AJ, the new Black Horse chef produced a fantastic Christmas menu which we all enjoyed.
