		+	On Saturday 2nd December at 3pm we are hosting at St. John’s Church a recital featuring our restored Samuel Green Pipe Organ. The guest musicians for this recital are Alastair and Gillian Ross.

		+	Alastair Ross was a chorister at Christ Church, and an organ scholar at New College, Oxford, where he gained a First in Music. He has worked as a freelance harpsichordist and organist for thirty-five years. He is principal keyboard player of the Academy of Ancient Music and The sixteen, with whom he played a Handel Organ Concerto in the 2009 BBC Proms. He also plays with Canzona, with whose director, Theresa Caudle, he teaches every year on courses of baroque chamber music at Benslow and Jackdaws.

		+	The English soprano, Gillian (Gill) Ross, became involved in the early music world via the Swansea Bach Week which invited all the most prestigious musicians in that field to lecture and perform. School and the Welsh Eisteddfod tradition also instilled into her a great love of singing with the result that she later gave up teaching to follow a professional singing career. Gillian Ross works with major baroque groups in London with whom she has appeared as a soloist on a number of recordings, and her recital repertoire now extends to Romantic Lieder and 20th Century American songs.

		+	Gilly and \| are thrilled to have been asked by Gavin Mole to give this recital, celebrating the restoration of the Samuel Green organ in St John’s Church.

		+	When I came to Wycombe in 1972 as Organist and Choirmaster at the Parish Church I soon heard about the Samuel Green organ. But \| never got around to visiting it. Until about ten years ago when Gilly, I and a friend were walking in the area and strolled into the church. We were saddened to see the organ looking sorry for itself and wondered whether it would ever be restored.

		+	So, when Gavin told us about the restoration by James Richardson Jones we were overjoyed!
		+
		+	Gilly and I come from ‘The Early Music World’. I play – both organ and harpsichord – with The Academy of Ancient Music and The Sixteen, groups whose aim is to perform music as it sounded when it was written. This involves research into styles of playing and particularly the use of original instruments. So, I have played old harpsichords in Fenton House, Hampstead, and the Russell Collection in Edinburgh.

		+	From a young age Gilly sang with the Swansea Bach Choir; they were performing with instrumentalists from Holland and Belgium long before musicians in this country had seen the light! Our three-soprano group Concerto delle Donne has performed with old organs in Framlingham, Suffolk, and recorded with a wonderful 1700 organ in Rozay-en-Brie, south east of Paris. And now – a special thrill for us – our cellist son George plays with The Consone Quartet, a group dedicated to performing, on old instruments with strings made of cattle gut, the quartets of 19<sup>th</sup> century composers from Beethoven to Mendelssohn.

		+	We visited the organ last Friday. A joy to play, reminding me very much of a Handel-style organ in St George’s, Hanover Square, made by the organ builders Goetz and Gwynne, on which I have played Messiah for so many years. These instruments are national treasures. Like old paintings and buildings they must be cared for, repaired if necessary, tuned when required, and not allowed to deteriorate.

		+	In our recital we will perform music by Handel, Bach, Purcell and William Byrd, who died 400 years ago. And more up-to-date music – the French composers Faure and Vierne, around the turn of the 20th century. Organs had become huge by this time – that’s a problem on the little Samuel Green! Perhaps we will have thought of other music by the time of our recital.

		+	After many years of fundraising, St John’s Church was finally able to pay for the services of the renowned organ restorer, James Richardson Jones to return the church organ – a Samuel Green Parlour Organ built in 1792 to its original condition.

		+	Not only the look, but also the sound of the instrument have been so much improved that it was felt appropriate to hold a celebratory concert. Our thanks go to Gavin and Cher Mole for arranging this, and for obtaining the services of Alastair Ross and his wife Gill to show off the many special features of the organ.
		+
		+	Alastair is a well-known and respected keyboard player, on both organ and harpsichord. His wife Gill has been a member of the Monteverdi Choir, under its conductor John Eliot Gardiner. They both have experience of performing with other old organs. We were very fortunate that they made their talents available to us.
		+
		+	The programme included works by Handel, Bach and Purcell. It was a revelation to have Alastair explain and demonstrate the use of the different stops on the organ.
		+
		+	We were delighted to see such a large and interested audience, including quite a number of other church organists, and especially Thomas Trotter, Birmingham City organist since 1993, who was greatly interested in the restoration of this almost unique historic instrument.
		+
		+	There was an opportunity after the concert for other organists to play the Samuel Green organ themselves. The remainder of the audience was able to socialise, and enjoy the refreshments provided by our church choir.

		+	So enjoyable was the occasion that it is hoped to have a repeat performance later this year, or perhaps in 2025, when St. John’s Church will be celebrating its 200th Anniversary. If you were not able to come to this great occasion, don’t miss the next!

 "Where is it?  On the Chiltern Hills is a little village named, Lacey Green In its Parish Church is the said organ, and moreover practically in the same condition as when it came from the factory of Samuel Green, London in 1792, the date recorded on the instrument.  The organ could not have been built for Lacey Green church, because the ecclesiastical parish was not formed nor the church erected until 1825, except the addition of the pedals - which only pull down the manual keys (there are no pedal pipes) - and the placing of all the drawstones on the right-handed side of the keyboard, this Green organ has not been modernised, but stands today as an interesting specimen of the craftsmanship of an eminent 18th century organ-builder, it's tone is musical not only in regard to individual stops, but in their various combinations, the blending being most satisfactory, while the full organ is by no means provocative of headache. Can all this be said of many modern organs?  The open diaspon is free from assertiveness, and the stopped diapson speaks with just that touch of wheeziness which lends additional charm to its tone.  After the overblown organs of the present day, it is quite refreshing to let one's fingers wander over the keys of this old instrument - one that is in perfect harmony with the quietude of that Buckinghamshire village."
