		+	My policy, whenever possible, has been to pursue the line of "live and let live" trusting in the other man's common sense and sensitivity. How wrong such a policy has proved to be in the case of the development on the Palmer and Harvey site in Church Lane!

		+	Bearing in mind that Church Lane is a country lane in an English village and, furthermore, has been designated as a conservation area, how is it possible that such houses as these now in process of being erected have been permitted by the Planning Authority. These houses dominate the area; they would be perfectly at home on an executive estate in Beaconsfield or in the more affluent outer suburbs of London, but they have no relevance or appropriateness in their present setting.

		+	Add to this the fact that the new roadway is to be called "Hambye Close". Do we really need to compound the foolishness of totally inappropriate houses by an equally inappropriate road name? I accept, and fully understand, the wish to recognise our twin town – but that is already being done by signs at each end of the village, by a Commemorative plate in the Church and by the sign on the Village Hall, not to mention regular twinning gatherings and several references’ in Hallmark.

		+	It seems to me that we should also keep in mind our own traditions and associations ‘and remember that this is an English country village. Surely it is not totally beyond us to think of a name for the new road which better befits the history of the area. I am sending a copy of this letter to the Chairman of the Planning Authority and to the Parish Council. It is, of course, too late for Church Lane – but it may help to make them think a little more sensitively in other planning applications.
