Ted & Margery Smith

From Lacey Green History

2005 Obituary of Margery in Hallmark

In 1932 Margery married Edward Smith. This took place at the Registry Office in Hertford as a way of evading the opposition of Edward's mother! But once the marriage had taken place it was accepted. Three children came along, starting with Bernard (1933), Annette and Laurence. Life for Margery and Ted really blossomed through golf. Margery loved her golf and introduced Ted to the sport and he turned out to be a natural! So there were all kinds of tournaments and at one point Margery was Ladies Captain of Whiteleaf Golf Club.

Ted sadly died in 1979 and this in a way marked the beginning of Margery's association with St John's. In 1981 Margery married Dick West. They shared a great love of travel during the two short years of their married life together. Richard died suddenly in October 1983. Peter Pereira was Margery's companion from 1987 until his death in ay 2003. They, too, enjoyed travel, often in Malta for the winter and the Black Forest in their caravan in the summer.

Margery was a great lover of family. The three children have led to ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchldren. Her passing, just five months after her 93rd birthday was most peaceful and lovely.
