Small House

The Small House was in Lower Road, Loosley Row.
The Post Office in Lower Road had a telephone, a rare thing just after WW2. Opposite, in the Small House lived Dr Ucko. His practice was in London. His patients would ring the postmaster, Henry Allen, who would signal to Dr Ucko by hanging a red handkerchief out of the bedroom window.
Dr Ucko had a son, Professor Peter Ucko, who bought the Old Post Office later called Green Pastures. He was a Professor of Archaeology, from Southampton University. Trevor Stevens, a carpenter & joiner, did some work on the house for him. Trevor told how much Peter loved the old place and wouldn’t have it changed. Following his death the old Post Office was demolished and a new house was built on the site. It was called ‘Green Pastures’
Reg Hickman was born in the Small House in 1906.
