A large area of land down Lily Bottom Lane and across to the Pink Road was owned by the Princes Risborough Charities from 1823. and is known as Parish Poor's Land. Doug Tilbury born 1934 whose father rented a small piece to farm at Hillock Cottages no 1. explained - People could rent a one acre strip or plot on which to grow food for themselves, or cereals to feed to pigs or chickens.
The rents were collected at Michaelmas, and distributed to the poor of the parish who had children, especially widows with children. Each home would be given one cwt.(hundredweight) of coal to keep them warm over Christmas.
