The father of John Forrest of Grymsdyke had an illustrious career, as follows :-
John Forrest Esq. M.D., C.B., Hon. Order of the Bath, born 1804 in Stirling Scotland.
In 1823 he was outlawed from Stirling, convicted of grave robbing, but pardoned the following year (1824).
In 1825 he joined the military 41st Regiment of Foot as hospital assistant to the forces.
1826. 20th Regiment of Foot, assistant surgeon.
1827 India military service Expedition against the Rajah of Kalapore, assistant surgeon.
1831, 8th West India Regiment of Foot, military assistant surgeon.
1832, 22nd Regiment of Foot, military staff assistant surgeon.
1839 Marriage to Ann McLachlan at St.Ninian's Scotland
Cape Town, South Africa.
1840 Mary Ann Forrest born.

1841 John Forrest 75th Regiment of Foot, military surgeon.
1842 Ann Forrest (mother) died. Children sent to England.
1842, Staff surgeon 2nd class.1846, Kaffir War, South Africa. Expedition beyond the Orange River against insurgent Boers.
1847, 91st Regiment of Foot, military staff surgeon 2nd class.
1850. Military Staff Surgeon, 1st class.
1854. Deputy Inspector of hospitals.
1858. Inspector General of hospitals. Medals Awarded 1856 & 1858.
U.K. 1859 - 1861. Hon. Physician to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.
1865 Died. Landown, Bath. after disease of the spinal chord for 3 years.
