Richard 'Richie' Leftwich born 1938, son of Richard & Margaret Leftwich, later described the cottage in 1940:-
It was an old semi-detached cottage. It had a large garden with fruit trees and they were able to grow all types of vegetables. There were three bedrooms upstairs and downstairs was a front lounge which was seldom used, and a sitting room where we lived. A wood burning stove was installed but certainly no central heating. We had no freezer or fridge for many years and I particularly remember Mother plugging her iron into the electric light soket. Frost used to occur on the inside of the bedroom windows in winter. Later a tap was installed but cold water only. Despite there being a couple of very large out-houses off the kitchen, there was no inside toilet or bathroom. These were not installed until he 1950's
