1980 Tribute by Ted Janes.
Since July 1976 Geoffrey Spear was a regular contributor to Hallmark on local government matters, so its a great sense of loss to us to report his death, on May 22nd at Amersham Hospital after a long illness. Those of us who have worked with him realise the tremendous courage and willpower he has shown in carrying on his council work.
He came from a farming family in Cornwall, at the age of three his parents moved t Great Hampden, so we always looked upon him as a Bucks man.
Educated at Great Hampden School and Dr Challoner's Grammar School for boys, but his aptitude for public speaking came as an enthusiastic member of the Missenden branch of the Young Farmers.
When his father retired from the family farming business in 1961, Geoffrey changed from animal to cereal farming, he was an active member of the National Famers Union for many years.
He first became a councillor in 199, representing Great and Little Hampden on the old Wycombe Rural District Council. In 1976 he became our district councillor, Hampden and Lacey Green having become one electoral area in the new Wycombe District Council. In 1973 he became County Councillor for the Risborough electoral area. With serving on two councils, the number of committees he sat upon are too numerous to mention in this short tribute.
Our sympathy goes to Mrs Spear and their son John.
The 81st Club have asked us to send condolences to Mrs Spear, who is one of their great helpers.
Geoffrey's death will necessitate a county and district by-election.
