Tribute to Mollie Hickman published by the Editor of Hallmark in August 1988

Mollie Merrison only had to travel a few miles from Pictonville to gain her married status when, in the late years of the war, she married Frank Hickman the son of Sid Hickman the well known Loosley Row builder. Frank was still in service uniform. Being a Bucks girl Mollie did not have any difficulty in settling down to life in Loosley Row and spent most of her married life actually engaged in village affairs.

Her two great interests were sport and the Women's Institute, I am not sure which was greater but in terms of years served it must be the WI. She was a member of Loosley Row and Lacey Green WI for over 30 years. As a committee member she was very forceful, many of her innovations, particularly Golf and Tennis Tournaments, broke new ground for the WI movement. The now annual The Pancake Race was instigated by Mollie.

Mollie's zest for life and sense of fun shone through in everything she did. In the days when the WI had a drama group I am told that her sense of fun could disrupt rehearsals, but she was always word perfect on the nig She was always prepared to accept a challenge; once as a member of the Village Hall Social Committee when we were trying to "do" something different and to raise money for the new hall, Mollie volunteered to make "Bacon Badgers" for 120 people.

She was a keen member of the Sports Club Tennis Section in its early days but as her game improved she became frustrated with a club with only one court and joined the Horsenden Club which had better facilities. Later in life she joined the Princes Risborough Bowls Club and soon excelled at this sport, being runner up in the 1987 Buckinghamshire 2 Woods Ladies Singles Championship.

It is sad for Frank who had only recently set out on a new retirement life, new interests and new friends at their cottage in Wales. To Frank and their two daughters Jenette and Leanda we send our deepest sympathy.
