1870. The Elementary Education Act set up partially funded schools, still fee paying, but poor parents could be exempted.

1880. The Mundella Act. Between 1881nand 1891, School Boards were required to enforce compulsory education from 5 - 10 years. Attendance Officers were appointed, but were often unsuccessful.

1918. The Fisher Act enforced education from 5 to 14 years. It also specified part time education for 14 - 18 year olds, but this was not implemented until 1921. There was no further major change until 1944.

1944. Butler's Education Act which divided Primary Schools into Voluntary Controlled, Voluntary Aided ( like St Johns, Lacey Green), and Direct Grant. School leaving age was raised to 15. This took full effect in 1947, when Labour came to power.
