Hallmark July 1993. Comment. Now, by almost tradition. another glorious day.

Hallmark July 1993. Report by Ingrid Goss-Gardner

What a glorious day! Who could have asked for better Village Day weather? The sun shone as Heather Couper declared the Day open and praised the hard work of the children and parents of the Windmill Under 5's playgroup. Their 'float' consisted of – about a dozen wheelbarrows – celebrating Peter Rabbit's 100th birthday was awarded the best float trophy. It was wonderful to see so many floats in the parade. So much time and thought had gone into them all.

Hundreds of people came and enjoyed the Day. I am sure that the English Civil War Society were a great draw, with both of their displays well attended.

The art competition and exhibition proved very popular, we had 75 entries and the winners were as follows:

Adult Class – Brian Panter

10-16 – Ann Gosling

5-10 – Charmaine Hope

O-5 – David Stothard

Thanks to Jeff Stuart of Harrisons for presenting the prizes, and to Dennis Syrett who had the unenviable task of judging the entries.

Our thanks also to all the village organisations who helped to make the day a success with their various activities and stalls, and of course, their donations to the Village Day Fund.

The following has been received by the Committee and will all go towards the final total which will be presented to the Village Hall Committee:

81st Over 60's Club £167 (what a great day they had!). Baptist Church £61, Craft Stall £193 (thanks to all Jane's hard work), Face Painting £16 (Linda Gaffin and helpers were busy most of the day), Methodist Church £50, St. John's PTA £48, Windmill W.I. £50, Scouts and Cubs £18, Lacey Green Singers £35 (collected at their concerts).

Thanks to Ray and Sam Musgrave at The Black Horse pub, they had a marvellous welcome to the village – being run off their feet all day and donating £200 to the fund.

On top of all their hard work Derek & Maureen Woodbridge also presented us with a cheque for £60.

I'm sure everyone noticed the wonderful new bunting made for us by Val Marchant, many thanks for all the time and work Val.

One person who gets my vote of thanks is Denis Croucher, who came in initially a bit warily but then threw himself wholeheartedly into organising the English Civil War Society's visit to Lacey Green and all that entailed. Hope you are free in 2 years time, Denis.

The committee would like to thank all their families and friends who have helped over the past 8 months, and especially over the Village Day weekend. Without these people so much would not have been achieved.

To all those people involved, too many to mention; who sold raffle tickets, programmes, hung bunting, decorated the hall, food at the dance, organising the bar at the dance, etc. etc. – Thank you.

The committee this year consisted of myself, Jenny Stothard and Derek Marchant. My thanks to Jenny and Derek for all their hard work and valuable time. We are keen to be involved in 1995, but it is too great an amount of work for 3 people. We would like more to join us on the committee, if anyone is interested please contact me.

Finally, Money, Money: How much have we made??

When we started planning the event we were despondent, sponsorship, donations and advertising were down on 1991 figures. However raffle ticket sales this year reached £930 ! (£680 in 1991) and many organisations have bettered 1991's donations, leading to a final profit of £2,000) which we will be presenting to the Village Hall Committee, for we understand, re-newing of some of the outer fabric cladding.
